ALTAI™ Pro Tip: How To Keep Your Camping Gear Mold-Free

Today’s blog post is brought to you by our fabulous blogger and outdoor guru, Katlyn Spade.

Camping is a favorite pastime among Americans with more than one million new households joining the camping family in 2018 alone. Undeniably, there are many benefits to camping, such as reconnecting with nature and family or friends, reducing stress, and improving your mood. On the downside, camping also entails maintaining your gear—from caring for hiking boots to storing tents properly both during and after time spent in the woods. Proper camping gear storage is essential to protecting your equipment from insidious threats like dry rot, mildew, and mold. Ensuring that these items are mold-free will prolong the life of your camping gear and equipment, giving you many years of use. More importantly, camping gear that is free from mold prevents inhalation of spores, which could cause respiratory problems.

Clean Tents, Backpacks, and Shoes

Tents are designed to provide shelter and to protect you from the rain and sun. They can withstand the harsh elements such as salt, humidity, and the harsh conditions outdoors. However, if you don’t clean and air your tent, mold and mildew are going to grow. After a camping trip, make sure that the tent is cleaned and air dried before storing it. Don’t just fold or shove it in one dark corner of your garage or basement as this will surely encourage the growth of mold.

If you suspect mold growth in your home but can’t find any traces of it, schedule a mold inspection to confirm its presence and remove it promptly. Mold does not only affect the walls, floors, or plumbing of your abode, it can also get in your shoes, backpack, and other items, again making a strong case for creating a clean area in your home for camping gear storage. For example, you’ll want to store your clean hiking boots in a well-ventilated and damp-free area rather than tossing them in the back of a closet or garage until your next adventure.

If it’s too late, and you need to know how to clean a tent with mold, there are a few ways to achieve this. Scrub the canvas of your tent with a brush using a solution of soap, lemon, and hot water. There are also enzymatic cleaners that you can use that are effective in removing stains from natural and synthetic fibers. Avoid using bleach on camping gear because they are harsh on the materials of your equipment.

Prevent Mold Growth While Camping

While there are ways to protect your camping gear in storage, there are several ways to prevent mold from appearing while you are using your camping gear. One is to invest in a tent footprint. This is a piece of cloth that you put under your tent to minimize tear and abrasion. Tent footprints can keep your tent warmer and also prevent water from pooling under the tent which will discourage the appearance of mold. Alternatively, use a tarp that can serve other purposes such as a cooking or dining area. Since mold thrives in a damp and humid environment, make it a habit to air your tent daily. Roll up ventilation flaps to change the air inside and get rid of musty odors especially after a heavy downpour.

It is also a good idea to leave shoes outside of the tent to prevent dirt from spreading inside. If it is raining, put your shoes in a waterproof bag and hang it inside. Just make sure to clean and air your footwear once the weather clears. The same goes for backpacks and anything that you’re using while camping. The key is to clean your gear and dry them thoroughly before storage.

Spending time outdoors is a fun and healthy way of recreation. Camping experience is enhanced if you take care of your camping gear ensuring that you create a dedicated camping gear storage area that is dry and well-ventilated to keep your boots and equipment mold-free. What to Pack for a Charter Fishing Trip

Sometimes the best catches can only be found in deeper water. But chances are that you don’t own a boat of your own to take you there. A fishing charter solves this dilemma by giving you the chance to ride on a boat and try your hand at reeling in impressive fish. Before you head out, though, you should ensure that you’re ready to go by knowing what to pack for a charter fishing trip.

Food and Water

Some charters offer food onboard, but regardless, it’s smart to bring along some food and water. Items that are easy to eat on the go are ideal, since you probably won’t want to leave your rod too long. Sandwiches, granola bars, and other such foods are ideal. As for water, you should have a sizable bottle so that you don’t get dehydrated over the course of the day.

Sun Protection

During your time on the boat, you’ll probably be exposed to a fair amount of sun. You should therefore take precautions to prevent damage from UV rays. Wear sunscreen on any skin that isn’t covered up by clothing. A brimmed hat can provide additional shade as well. Polarized sunglasses are also a must since the light reflection from the water can harm your eyes and make it harder to see anything.

Adapted Clothing

Wetness on the boat is another factor that you’re going to need to cope with. A sunny day can quickly turn stormy out at sea, so have a jacket ready that will repel water. You should also wear slip-resistant footwear, such as rubber-soled shoes or outdoor boots that have the traction to keep you stable even on the slick surface of the deck. It may be even better if you don footwear that is waterproof, as this will keep your feet more comfortable even if the gear gets soaked. AltaiGear provides boots that have both these qualities, which means that they’ll perform well in the unpredictable conditions you may find on a charter fishing trip. Look through our website and find the right match for you.

ALTAI™ Local Spotlight: Rice Park

Here at ALTAI™, we don’t just make great boots. We also have a passion for hiking, camping, and all things outdoors. We are on a mission to check out as many local nature destinations as possible, and we were eager to check Rice Park off our list. Rice Park is a park in the Twin Cities that beautifully blends an urban setting with mother nature. Located in downtown St. Paul, Rice Park is near the Mississippi River and is host to a ton of awesome events year-round including concerts, festivals, and a skating rink in the winter.

ALTAI™ Waterproof Hiking Boot

We were there on a sunny winter afternoon and had a great time walking over to the Mississippi and checking out the scene. The high bridge spanning the river is also a particularly impressive view. Since Charles Schultz, the creator of Peanuts, is originally from St. Paul, there are statues of Peanuts characters located in various locations around the Twin Cities. They can also be found at Rice Park. Rice Park is a great outdoor destination for Twin Cities residents and visitors alike—whether you’re there to enjoy a local band in the summer, or to go ice skating in the winter.

ALTAI™ 8″ Brown Waterproof Zip Up Hunting Boots Model: MFH200-Z

You do no need to wait until spring to enjoy the outdoors! Recently, Team ALTAI™ picked a sunny day to check out one of our local hiking destinations: Lake Phalen. Lake Phalen is in St. Paul and is one of the Twin Cities’ largest urban lakes with three miles of shoreline and an area of just under 200 acres. When we arrived, the lake was frozen solid and covered in about six inches of snow. It was chilly and windy, but the sun was shining bright. And we weren’t alone at the park; dozens of other people were there to hike around the lake’s wonderful walking path.

Hikes like this are one of the best and most accessible ways to get outdoors and stay active. Luckily in Minnesota, we have enough outdoor and recreation areas to be enjoyed by all. So, the next time you’re feeling restless at home and the weather isn’t exactly acting like a tropical paradise, see if you can still find a way to get out and about. How to Choose the Right Hiking Boots

The boots that you wear on a trek can make or break the experience. Unlike the sidewalks and indoor floors you might usually walk around, hikes can include rougher ground that is less even, more loose, and wetter. Footwear that is not suited to the conditions you tackle will quickly become damaged and won’t give you the proper traction, stability, and comfort. For this reason, you need to find boots that will meet your demands. Here’s how to choose the right hiking boots.

Consider Your Needs

Before you go looking for a new pair of boots, you can narrow your choices by determining what you will use them for and, consequently, what specifications you need and prefer. If you only go on shorter-length day hikes and prioritize traveling light, you can probably choose footwear that has a low- or mid-cut and which provides midsole flexibility. If you hike over extended distances for several days and don’t always follow the trail path, a heavy-duty high-cut boot with maximum ankle support and a rigid full-grain leather upper may be your best choice.

You should also consider the climate and terrain. Breathable, lightweight boots will give you the ventilation you need to stay comfortable in a dry, warm region. Thicker, waterproof boots, on the other hand, will fit a cold area where it may rain or snow. For hard ground, an outsole that has wider treads is ideal for gripping because it makes the most contact with the terrain. For softer ground, an outsole with deeper treads is preferable, as it can dig into the soil and prevent you from slipping on the surface. Many boots offer an effective medium between these two sides for all-around use.

Find a Good Fit

A pair of boots could have lots of impressive details, but if they don’t fit right, they’ll cause you pain. When you try on new boots, there are several factors to be aware of. First, you should aim to test the boots in the afternoon when your feet are slightly larger due to swelling that occurs over the course of the day. Wear the pair of socks you plan to use when you go hiking to account for the added layer as well. The boot should be the proper length for your foot so that there remains some space in front of your toes, even when you walk down a slope.

As for the rest of the boot, you shouldn’t feel any uncomfortable pinching or pressure on any portion of your foot. Your heel should also remain secure as you walk so that you don’t develop blisters. Note that the way you lace can change the feel of a boot, so try a few different methods when testing a pair out. Additionally, you might switch out the insole with a custom version to accommodate high or flat arches. If you already use orthotics, bring them with you to the store so you could see how the boots feel using them.

If you’re looking for hiking footwear, consider AltaiGear’s lightweight tactical boots. They offer traction, breathability, and all-day comfort so you can pursue adventure unimpeded.

ALTAI Spotlight: Donut Boy

Tyler Carach (aka Donut Boy) accomplished more by age 11 than most. Many of you may remember Tyler from last November when he helped us deliver boots to officers during our National Boot Giveaway. In 2016, he used his own allowance money to buy mini donuts for some police officers at his local convenience store. When he noticed how much joy it brought the officers, he set his sights on a much bigger goal: thanking every law enforcement officer in America by giving them donuts and coffee. Donut Boy has since launched his own organization, visited all 50 states, and given out nearly 100,000 donuts, or ‘power rings’ as he calls them. Besides personally thanking so many police officers, he has helped to spread a positive message that we need to be nice to each other. Donut Boy is certainly an inspiration of ours; he even dreams of becoming a K9 officer himself one day (so he can have a dog AND help people).

ALTAI™ has partnered with Donut Boy to help spread his message and to help thank the law enforcement officers who protect us every day. Anytime our department approved boots are purchased, a portion of the proceeds go towards Donut Boy’s organization, I Donut Need a Reason to Thank a Cop. Donut Boy is a great reminder to all of us, young and old, to show gratitude and kindness whenever we can; especially to those who so often go underappreciated and taken for granted. So, this one is for you, Donut Boy, we raise a power ring and a cup of joe in your honor!
