The History of the Combat Boot – We’ve come a long way, baby

History of the combat boot

The history of the combat boot in the military.

Footwear for warfare; it’s come a long way since its first emergence onto the battlefield. Since the 1700s, combat boots have been a critical component to a soldier’s arsenal of gear. Frontline troops spend extended hours in their boots, trudging through the roughest of terrains.

The earliest combat boots were surprisingly simplistic. But countless injuries from poor insulation from the cold and trench foot from excessive moisture were clear signs that soldiers on the ground need better footwear. In fact, some have even reported seeking ongoing treatment from footwear-related injuries almost 30 years later. Now it’s not so tough to see what sparked decades of improvements to combat boots, with plenty more to come.

Today, combat boots come with an array of features; ranging from new space-aged materials to incredible waterproofness. Side-zips offer quick gearing up with perfect comfort, every time. Super lightweight materials for outsoles make a world of difference for weary feet during long missions. The military also expanded its offering to soldiers: two pairs of hot weather boots and one pair of temperate weather boots for Basic Training. Modern combat boots offer superior ruggedness, depending on the environment and situation; beyond what one standard-issue boot from the past could do.

Many components are used in modern combat boots, unlike the typical leather boots from the past. Our main, and most noticeable, champion-component, SuperFabric®, is incorporated into every one of our boots. The result: a combat boot that can defend from the harsh terrain any soldier of the Armed Forces faces.  For a complete look at our version of the modern combat boot, check out our offering here.

ALTAI™ Is Honoring Armed Forces Week: Air Force

Celebrating the US Air Force

Armed Forces Week

What would be Armed Forces week if we didn’t celebrate the United States Air Force? With its origins in the U.S. Army, branched off on their own in 1907. Being the only branch of Armed Forces that fought directly with the Soviet Union, you can bet these ‘boots in the air’ are some of the toughest people in the military. It’s also no wonder,

But it’s not just the airmen and airwomen that make this branch so dynamic. Most soldiers in this branch support the wide range of duties an air force base like guarding the base, rescue missions, and even construction of new airstrips.

So if you know a member of the Air Force, be sure to thank them for their services in honor of Armed Forces Week!

ALTAIgear™ Is Honoring Armed Forces Week: Navy

USMC

Armed Forces celebrations continue as today we highlight the United States Navy and what makes this branch of the military exemplify the ever-inspiration moto: “Not for self, but for country.”

For a group of people who are literally trained to process fear differently from the rest of us, you can bet the Marines are some of the toughest in the world. This also includes, the elite U.S. Navy SEALs.  Their acute ability to conquer strenuous physical activity and power through a gauntlet of mental challenges, this branch of the Armed Forces truly deserves its ultra-rugged reputation.

Approximately 300,000 strong, we can be assured that our men and women in the U.S. Navy are keeping us protected and safe. Because if you have ever seen the movie TOPGUN, you can actually be fairly confident in its accuracy, in terms of the importance of the Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Program. So carry on with Armed Forces Week and the U.S. Navy.
